Studiens teoretiske rammeverk presenterer tre ulike teorier.
Children exposed to painful experiences early in life, will occasionally develop a reaction pattern which can be difficult to understand for teachers. Some of these children are temporarily placed in an institution. According to statistics, only a few of these children complete primary school, and an even greater part is likely to become a criminal or end up on disability aid (Drange & Hernæs, 2020). Based on this, I will try to get an understanding of how theoretical framework and professionals may help these children to complete primary school. To investigate this further, the following issue is highlighted: “How can the completion percentage of primary school for children that lives at a child welfare institution increase, this through action on both individual level and system level”
In order to achieve this purpose, I have conducted five qualitative research interviews, with participants that holds a long experience of working with children that lives in a child well fare institution. These interviews have been crucial in order to get insight in the participants experiences and perspectives on this subject. The findings from the interviews have been analyzed with help of a thematic analysis, and three main areas have been identified:
Complex challenges in meeting with school, the need for individual support in and outside of school, and the need for organizational changes in the school system. These three areas will be introduced and later discussed in the light of the thesis theoretical framework and context.
This thesis theoretical framework presents three different theories. The tolerance window model will be used as a lens to the polyvagal theory, to understand the individual challenges that the children meet at school. The Bronfenbrenners ecological system theory will be used to analyze the challenges and factors aligned with the school system set up in the meeting between the child and school. The self-determination theory will be used to get a greater understanding of how these individual and system factors affect each other.
This thesis makes valuable contributions to the understanding of vulnerable children’s challenges in the school system, that can be of use for both professionals and politicians.
Through this insight and findings, I hope to be able to contribute to a better support for these children in my role as school responsible at a well fare child institution.
