This thesis provides a sociolinguistic analysis of code-switching to English in the first season of the Norwegian TV-series Førstegangstjenesten. The purpose of the research is to find out what social and non-linguistic factors influence code-switching and how linguistic choices reflect character portrayal and social dynamics in the series, viewed as a mirror to the speech of youth in urban Norway.
This is a qualitative study where I use Interactional Sociolinguistics as my theoretical framework. Additionally, elements from Conversation Analysis are utilized to create a detailed transcription of the characters’ dialogue. Moreover, I examine contextualization cues, such as verbal and non-verbal signs, which provide meaning to the interactions. The analysis takes into account which grammatical types of code-switching are employed and which functions it performs in the various interactions.
The study shows that the characters utilize different types and functions of code-switching proportionate to their sense of identity and relative power dynamics in conversational interactions. By extension, these findings contribute to our understanding of how youth use code-switching in society more generally, and they also offer insights into how teachers can employ code-switching in the classroom.
