A study of the wartime experiences of twenty naval veterans: The reality of the war at sea for the men of the Royal Norwegian navy during the second world war

Abstract

Denne tesen tar utgangspunktet i 20 intervjuer tatt av Horten marinemuseum for å svare på spørsmålet som er nemlig, hva mennene intervjuet så på som de mest betydelige aspektene av sine krigserfaringene i den Kongelig Norske marinen i løpet av den andre verdenskrig. Tesen tar deres vitnesbyrd i form av en serie muntlige historier, koblet med annet kildemateriale for å skape et komplett bilde av sin krigstjeneste. Resultatet skal bringe frem ny informasjon om sine egne, personlige erfaringer, sammen med de som Sjøforsvaret som helhet.

This thesis takes a series of interviews conducted by the Horten naval museum in Norway and seeks to answer the question as to what the men interviewed viewed as the most significant, yet unexpected aspects of their wartime experiences in the service of the Royal Norwegian navy during the second world war. It is to use their testimony through a series of oral histories, in conjunction with other source material to create a complete picture of their wartime service, bringing to light new information about their own, personal experiences, along with those of the Royal Norwegian navy as a whole.
