Da hadde epidemien allerede fått rotfeste i USA. Oppgaven har to deler.
This master's thesis presents a study of the press coverage of the AIDS epidemic in VG in the 1980s. The source material comprises over 600 newspaper articles mentioning the word "AIDS" from 1982 to 1989. Furthermore, the thesis is based on a hypothesis, which has been articulated by long-term HIV-positive survivors, that VG's press coverage contributed to increased stigma of homosexuals. This thesis therefore aims to discuss this hypothesis. On the whole, I will do both for the history of AIDS, the Norwegian development history for gays and an in-depth discussion around the concept of stigma. Norway got its first case of AIDS in January 1983. By then, the epidemic had already taken root in the United States. The first cases of AIDS led to a lot of fear in the population. In the beginning, the disease was characterized as a disease that mainly affected gay men, and in this way, gays became more and more stigmatized. In the early stages of the epidemic, we can see several examples of both the press and the population getting the impression of AIDS as a homosexual disease. In this thesis I will look at how Norway's largest newspaper, VG, covered this story. There are three elements in particular that this thesis is based on explaining; Are there any changes in how VG presents the epidemic? How did VG describe AIDS in the years 1982 to 1989? What kind of new words, metaphors and language does VG use in its presentation of the AIDS epidemic? The thesis has two parts. In the first part, I problematize the concept of stigma and look at how stigma and disease are connected. Furthermore, I want to give an insight into the history of AIDS and the history of gays towards the AIDS epidemic. In the second part, I will conduct a quantitative analysis of headlines and content in the VG articles, before I in the last part will discuss the thesis' main problem: Could VG's press coverage of the AIDS epidemic in the 80's have contributed to increased stigma of homosexuals?
