dc.description.abstract | This theses is exploring the process combining two instrument traditions, the Hardangerfiddle and the Viola, and by that developing a new instrument; what I have called a Hardangerviola. A premis for this thesis is that any instrument influences the musical expression in a fundamental way, both through its sound and as a musical tool and -premise supplier. Through a long process, interpretated in light of Material agency and the practice epistomology Knowledge-in-action, I have tried to explore what opportunities that lies in an instrument like this. The methods I have used has been analyzing relevant instruments, interview of makers and musicians, and textural studies. The most central method has been the building-process itself, and the reflection and knowledge that lies inherent in such a practical process is the central core in this thesis.
