Sammendrag
This master thesis is based around a specific design task: creating furniture for “Nye

Central Hotel” in Notodden. The hotel was originally built in 1909 and will, according to

the plan, soon be reconstructed and re- opened after several years out of business. The

goal for the design task has been to make suggestions for furniture/ interior design

inspired by buildings and other constructions in Rjukan-Notodden world heritage area.

The furniture should show a connection between form, function, and meaning. The

design should also convey a concept for the hotel. The thesis is based on, and takes a

closer look at the different stages in a design process. I present background information

about the industrial history of Rjukan-Notodden, and why the area recently has been

included on the UNESCO’s world heritage list. I have also done field work by analyzing

certain hotel- rooms in Norway, focusing on the practical and aesthetical use of furniture

in connection with the concept of the hotel. The inspiration for my own design is based

on aesthetic and sublime qualities of buildings and other constructions in Rjukan-

Notodden world heritage area. In the practical design work, I have come up with

suggestions for bedroom furniture through sketching, tests in materials and reflection on

my own ideas. The practical outcome is a bed with headboard, two nightstands and a

modular sofa in two parts. The design and practical work is collaboration with my fellow

student Hilde Opedal Nordby, who has made the textiles for the room.
