Øygarden, L.E. Gjennom historisk sus : innlæring av musikk frå ei voksrullkjelde. Master thesis, Telemark University College, 2015Sammendrag
My thesis has dealt with the subject of learning hardangerfiddle tunes from wax cylinder recordings from 1912. The man playing on the recordings was Olav Sigurdson Fyrileiv (1828-1913) from Åmotsdal, Telemark. It turned out that he might be the earliest born hardangerfiddleplayer ever recorded in Norway. Throughout my work, I have studied and explored the traditions surrounding the recordings. I have found many interesting facts about an area where there has been relatively little research done previously. Åmotsdal turned out to be an exciting area to work with because there had been so many people there playing the fiddle. This knowledge helped me to perform the tune I learned from the recording with a bit more freedom. Freedom in a sense that I could understand the variations that I heard, and could supplement with my own. To increase my repertorie of tunes was the main motivation behind the project. But I also found the connection between this tune "Sevliden" and other tunes that I knew beforehand. Amongst which was "Trulseguten", and other versions of Sevliden that were recorded elsewhere. My end product was a version of Sevliden that I feel is my own style of playing, but is based on the form given by Olav Sigurdson on the recording.
