The article describes a course in electronic nursing documentation for first- year bachelor nursing students, and the students evaluation of this course.14 students participated. Focus group interviews were used for data collection. Results: The students felt well prepared in using electronic documentation, but only partial compliance between the teaching program and the way the clinical field used electronic documentation, was reported. At the university college, the students were taught to write nursing care plans and reports, while the ward staff primarily documented reports; the students utilised the electronic system mainly in the same way as the ward staff did. The article discusses the net generation's potentials in this context. Conclusion: Nursing students should be provided with the opportunity to practise electronic nursing documentation in courses at the university college. But in order to achieve appropriate skills, qualified learning opportunities are required during the clinical studies. Areas for research collaboration between the clinical field and the university college are suggested.
