The purpose of AIS Visual Communication is to improve and simplify the user interface of ECDIS by displaying information about navigational status from AIS with lantern symbols on the screen. Telko AS, the company behind TECDIS, developed new software that displays lanterns in the AIS symbols, for use in this research project. The software was installed on a desktop navigation simulator at the University of South Eastern Norway (USN). An experiment was developed to investigate whether the new user interfaces could contribute to improved situational awareness and reduced workload compared to the current user interfaces. The university's nautical students from 2nd and 3rd grade were invited to participate in the experiment. The experiment used the well-known methods Situation Awareness Global Assessment Technique (SAGAT) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index (NASA TLX). In addition, interviews were conducted with all participants. The results of the experiments led to a clear conclusion.
