Objective: The study will identify how many women giving birth can go home early after giving birth in Haugesund and what characterize these. The extent of outpatient contact and readmission in the period from early postnatal discharge and to ordinary maternity leave 72 hours after birth will also be mapped. Method: The study is a retrospective cross-sectional study of the collection of data from patient records. All births in 2019 were assessed according to the criteria for early discharge. Results: In 2019, 288 woman (22,5% of all childbirths) could have been discharged early, from 6 to 19 hours postpartum in accord with the current criteria. Based on journal information, it is estimated that 34,7% of the 288 women would have experienced complications after returning home. Six out of ten woman have registered distance from their place of residence to the hospital within 20 km. Almost four of ten, would have experienced before the child is 72 hours old, mainly due to jaundice after being discharged. Most could have been followed up on an outpatient basis. Four children would have been readmitted due to jaundice, nutritional problems or infection. Conclusion: A significant portion of births at Haugesund Hospital could be discharged early. These could lead to increased outpatient consultations which could be a burden for parents, children and the ward. Improved preparedness in the municipality could reduce the load and increase safety of children and mothers using the services. Key words: postpartum, postnatal, after childbirth, infant and “early discharge”.
