Introduksjon

Folkebibliotekene er settinger som kan nå hele befolkningen. Folkebibliotekene har en lang historie, men endres i takt med samfunnet. De siste årene har folkebibliotekene i større grad blitt møtesteder.

Tema og problemstilling

Undersøkelsen omhandler folkebibliotekenes betydning for livskvalitet. Problemstillingen er:

Hvordan kan folkebiblioteket forstås som setting med betydning for folks livskvalitet?

Problemstillingen belyses med følgende tre forskningsspørsmål:

1) Hvilke følelser og tanker knytter bibliotekbrukere til folkebiblioteket? 2) Hvordan utvikles tilknytning til folkebiblioteket? 3) Hvordan kan bibliotekarer legge til rette for å gjøre folkebiblioteket til et sted som fremmer livskvalitet?

Teorigrunnlaget

Det teoretiske perspektivet ser menneskelige erfaringer gjennom begrepene sted og rom. Et sted er noe man har tillagt mening, mens rom er mer abstrakt og åpent. Begrepene står på hver sin side av et kontinuum, men påvirker og infiltrerer hverandre.

Metode

Individuelle, semistrukturerte intervjuer ble gjennomført med tre folkebibliotekbrukere og syv folkebibliotekansatte.

Data

Undersøkelsen bygger på kvalitative data. Intervjuer ble tatt opp med diktafon og transkribert fra lyd til tekst.

Hovedfunn

Folkebibliotekene har tilsynelatende betydning for livskvalitet. Mennesker foretrekker forskjellige aspekter ved folkebibliotekene, og får forskjellige behov dekket der. Folkebibliotekene er settinger med steder mennesker føler tilhørighet og tillit til, samt innehar rom for frihet og myndiggjøringsprosesser. På folkebibliotekene kan man eksponeres for medmenneskers anerkjennende blikk, og «jeg» og «de» kan bli en del av et større «vi». Samtidig er det ambivalens knyttet til hva folkebibliotek er i dag. Bibliotekarene, bøkene, gratisprinsippet og det at folkebibliotekene er for alle, virker avgjørende for livskvalitet.

Introduction

Public libraries are settings that can reach the entire population. Public libraries have a long history, but change in step with society. In recent years, public libraries have to a greater extent become meeting places.

Theme and issue

The study deals with the importance of public libraries for quality of life. The main research question is: How can the public library be understood as a setting with significance for people's quality of life?

The main research question is illustrated with the following three research questions: 1) What feelings and thoughts do library users attach to the public library? 2) How does the connection to the public library develop? 3) How can librarians facilitate to make the public library a place that promotes quality of life?

The theoretical basis

The theoretical perspective sees human experiences through the concepts of place and space. A place is something that has been given meaning, while space is more abstract and open. The concepts stand on opposite sides of a continuum, but influence and infiltrate each other.

Method

Individual, semi-structured interviews were conducted with three public library users and seven public library employees.

Data

The survey is based on qualitative data. Interviews were recorded with a dictaphone, and transcribed from audio to text.

Main findings

Public libraries apparently have an impact on quality of life. People prefer different aspects of public libraries, and have different needs covered there. The public libraries are settings with places where people feel a sense of belonging and trust, as well as having space for freedom and empowerment processes. In public libraries, one can be exposed to the appreciative gaze of fellow human beings, and "I" and "they" can become part of a larger "we". At the same time, there is ambivalence related to what public libraries are today. The librarians, the books, the free principle and the fact that the public libraries are for everyone, have a decisive effect on the quality of life.
