Abstract

This thesis discusses how I have applied some methods of analysis on songs appearing in the folk music-archives, and how I have used the results in a mediation-process connected to learning folksongs from Ludvig Mathias Lindemans notations of folksongs from the county of Vestfold, Norway. My focus lies on the rhythms since that is what I find most challenging when learning a folksong from a notation.

I also discuss what’s missing in a notation; what I would have to do with my interpretation of the song in order for it to be recognized as a Norwegian folksong by an audience familiar with this genre.

My goal with this project was to develop as a folk-singer and to get access to a wider perspective of how to interpret rhythms in a folksong mediated from a notation.
