Most industries, including the accounting industry, are today affected by technological developments. Accounting already use digital tools to perform work tasks, but with further technology development in the future, digital tools will have the potential to have a major impact on work tasks technology development in the future. Therefore, in this dissertation I have chosen to investigate the problem “How will the work tasks for the accountant change when the customers are automated?” Qualitative methods have been used in this dissertation. The data were obtained through 10 interviews where the informants have good knowledge within the accounting industry. This has been done in surveys among a limited number of informants, but the selection of informers has provided valuable insight into various parts of the industry. The technological developments has led to questions about what the accounting industry should do with work tasks in the future. One sees that some still have their greatest weight on work tasks such as traditional bookkeeping, reporting to the government and payroll. Debt is being automated and will probably be fully automated in the near future. This will most likely take some time and this time should be used for skills development and development of new products and services that the accounting industry can offer its customers. It is startling that only 7.5% of turnover in the industry consists of consulting and consulting services (Regnskap Norge, 2019). There needs to be a strong increase in this field going forward. Traditional bookkeeping, with the advent of the EHF and the stricter law around this, can result in traditional accountants disappearing. What accounting companies can then do with work tasks are controller tasks, consulting and financial consulting. As of today, it is the same work tasks as before, but it goes faster, and the accountants can have more customers.
