Slaget ved Kringen: Betydning for Kalmarkrigen og nasjonal identitet på 1800-tallet

Abstract

Denne masteren handler om å vise slaget ved Kringen sin plass i norsk kultur og identitet på 1800-tallet. Slaget fant sted i 1612 og det finnes flere samtidskilder som omhandler hendelsen. I oppgaven vil samtidskildene bli brukt for å vise hvilket inntrykk man kan få av slaget og av nordmennene og skottene som var til stede.

Sagnene som ble samlet inn fra 1838 til 1879 er ryggraden i oppgaven. Det er disse tekstene som gjør at man kan argumentere for at det skjedde en heroisering av de norske bøndene og slaget ved Kringen i løpet av 1800-tallet. Ved å sammenligne med samtidskildene og de ulike sagnsamlingene blir argumentet sterkere. I tillegg blir det fokus på at heroiseringen av slaget ved Kringen henger sammen med innsamlingen av folkefortellinger og utviklingen av en norsk nasjonal identitet. Maleri, dikt og andre kulturuttrykk som fremstilte slaget ved Kringen på 1800-tallet vil også bli beskrevet og drøftet. Dette er for å kunne vise hvordan slaget ble fremstilt i norsk elitekultur.

Men dette er også en oppgave om Kalmarkrigen 1611-1613 og et slag som er blitt blant Norgeshistoriens mest omtalte og kjente krigshendelser. Derfor blir det også fokus på å beskrive og drøfte hva historikerne i ettertid mener var årsak til krigen og norsk seier.

This master's is about showing the battle of Kringen's place in Norwegian culture and identity in the 19th century. The battle took place in 1612 and there are several contemporary sources that deal with the incident. In the thesis, the contemporary sources will be used to show what impression one can get of the battle and of the Norwegians and Scots who were present.

The legends collected from 1838 to 1879 are the backbone of the thesis. It is these texts that make it possible to argue that there was a heroization of the Norwegian farmers and the battle of Kringen during the 19th century. By comparing with the contemporary sources and the various collections of legends, the argument becomes stronger. In addition, there will be a focus on the fact that the heroisation of the battle of Kringen is connected with the collection of folk tales and the development of a Norwegian national identity. Paintings, poems and other cultural expressions that depicted the battle of Kringen in the 19th century will also be described and discussed. This is to be able to show how the battle was portrayed in Norwegian elite culture.

But this is also an assignment about the Kalmar War 1611-1613 and a battle that has become one of the most talked about and known war events in Norwegian history. Therefore, there will also be a focus on describing and discussing what historians later believe was the cause of the war and Norwegian victory.
