In my master thesis, I analyze the use of the concept “trivsel” that in social studies often translates to the concept of well-being or thrive. Children's right to thrive in kindergarten is rooted in the Kindergarten Act (2005) and the curriculum for kindergarten (Ministry of Education, 2017). With a new chapter in the law, that came into force on 1st January 2021 and ensures the childs psychosocial environment of the kindergarten, the kindergarten is given the duty to ensure that kindergarten children experience a safe and healthy childhood and a high quality of life. The concept of “trivsel” is widely used in the curriculum for kindergarten, but how should it be interpreted? The term is volatile and has no definition - does the curriculum for kindergarten give us any clear answers? In my analysis of the curriculum, I find that even though it states that well-being, friendship and play are fundamental to a good childhood, the concept of “trivsel” is not explained and the assignment of how kindergartens should work with the concept is not transparent, as the way the concept is used throughout five of the nine chapters of the curriculum. Through the analysis, I find several parts where the concept of “trivsel” should have been used in the text and experience an inconsistent use of the term that can lead to undesirable interpretations of this document. The master thesis is rooted in research where children's perspectives are communicated, and I look at what ́s in play for the children if the meaning and content of the concept of “trivsel” is not properly understood by the users of the curriculum for kindergarten.
