This master thesis looks closer at how three museums in Østlandet choses a theme and picks out objects for exhibition. By comparative analysis of the museums' exhibition approch I look closer at what role the theme and the objects play in the production of exhibitions. I chose three museums with focus on cultural history. One was a museum run by volunteers in a local community (Bø museum in Telemark). The second was a city museum with a focus of a great importance for the citys history, for instence the silver mines (Norwegian Mining Museum in Kongsberg). The last is a consolidated museum. It has smaler museums in several difirent citys and comunities (Telemark museum). I chose these becouse they may be used to represent diferent types of museums which are smal and medium sized. Therefore they may be used as compareson to the more average spectre of museums in Norway. They are therfore not compareble with the smalest or the larger ones. The thesis looks at who choses the theme and the objects and what role these play in the exibition process as a whole. Through this I show what etical considerations museums have to makes beforehand. Through this I aim to show what the museums must consider within their framework .By showing this part of the work of the museums I wish to iluminate and show a side of the museums' work which usually is not avalible the public . I also reflect on why this part of museums' work has not been studied to any great extent earlier. The basis of the thesis is interviews with people working in museums.
