This thesis is a systematic research and comparison of three fiddle players from the Brekken area. The folk music tradition in Brekken consists of several branches, which are rooted to the villages of Brekken, Tamneset and Feragen. The fiddlers that are chosen from each area are: Anders Sjøvold, Jørgen Tamnes and Annar Sundt. They are strong representatives from each of the areas style of playing. The purpose of the thesis is to find differences and similarities between each of the branches in the Brekken tradition. The elements that are compared and used for this discussion are bowing, multistring use, rhythmical figures, speed, tempo, ornamentation and tonality. The results in each area of research are approached with analyses, literature, oral dialog, own practice and discussion. The concept of style is an important part of the discussion in this thesis. The audio material that is used in the analyses consists only of pols, and is presented in recordings and sheet music. The target of this project is to create awareness and interest in different styles of playing in a folk music heavy areas like Brekken.
