This master thesis has attempted to shed light on how children and young people's use of social media affects their social relationships. Social media as we know it today has slowly but surely grown at the beginning of the 2000s and has taken the whole world by storm. In this thesis, I have chosen to formulate the following problem: What does the research say about children and young people's use of social media and what significance it may have for their social relationships?
In order to answer this problem, I have chosen to carry out a systematic inspired literature study. The assignment has included nine peer-reviewed studies as the basis for the data material. The articles have been analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings show that the use of social media leads to both positive influences and negative consequences on children and young people's social relationships. The themes in the thesis are: belonging, acceptance and social inclusion, a safe place to share, keep in touch, friendship, destructive to social development, social exclusion, loneliness, social identity and bad behavior online. In the discussion part of the thesis, I choose to see the themes in the light of Bronfenbrenner's developmental ecology model as a framework. Other theoretical approaches that are included in the thesis are social capital, socialization, identity and belonging. The assignment contributes to maintaining and continuing the discourse of competence vs. concern and concludes that the influence of social media is not clear-cut. It would be appropriate to carry out further research into the impact of social media on children and young people's social relationships, and if one is to think about preventive work, it may be profitable to examine which measures may be useful to target this very topic.
