Human dignity is a basic yet fundamental character of what constitutes a human, as humans deserve to be respected, treated with value, and equality. Dignity is the basis for all human rights, and thus, every violation of any human right is a violation of human dignity in its simplest meaning. Therefore, equality is significant in upholding the dignity of all genders. This study aims to promote gender equality through examining masculinities within the context of the Gaza Strip. Employing a qualitative, cross-sectional design, the data was collected through semi-structured interviews. This study makes use of Braun and Clarke's (2022) thematic analysis approach aimed at understanding and analyzing the data and addressing the research question. The analysis unfolded three overarching themes: “He is the one required to work and provide for the family,”; “He [the man] should be the owner of the word in the house,” and “Women should stay inside for their sake and own protection.” These themes highlight the three masculine performative roles and the underlying factors behind their existence and persistence. To capture the unique context of Gaza, this study employs the analytical tool of intersectionality and incorporates Judith Butler's concept of performativity. Additionally, inspired by Pual Kviel’s “Act Like a Man Box”, I theorized the “Boxed Masculinities” framework. Engaging with the data through this theoretical lens, the study concludes that religion (the concept of Guardianship), culture/social (the culture of honor), and spatial/contextual (the closure) are the main factors behind the existence and persistence of these masculine performative roles. These factors have collectively generated an intrinsic value, which I have labeled as Masculine Dignity. This masculine dignity in its nature excludes femineity. To gain respect or be treated as a dignified human, every person, men and women, should perform within this boxed masculinity. Femininity, from the feminine body to the feminine name, is erased and hidden in the public in the name of religion, honor, and culture. Therefore, in Gaza to be seen as a human is to perform as a man, or to be seen in the shadow of one.
